So I’ve been thinking about my dream setup once my wife and I finally buy our forever home. My main goal is to have an at home golf simulator, but I was wondering what y’all think about also hooking up all of my retro consoles to the same projector and playing them on the same thing I use for the simulator. Projector tech is so good now (we have a simulator my in-laws bought us 2 years ago and the 4K image is awesome). But would the consoles work on it? Would the picture look ok and would there be any lag? I’d try one on mine but they’re all packed up. Any insight would be awesome because I’d love to create a golf/retro game man cave.

I have a 4k projector and while I love it for film and anime I have no desire to try old video games on it. Mostly I just don't want to see stuff that was designed for 20 inch CRTs blown up to 100'' in 4K.

There is no reason consoles wouldn't work on it though, as long as you have a way to hook them up to the projector. You'd likely need an eternal processor to hook things up to it as I'd imagine most are only going to have HDMI input. As far as lag you'd want to look into the projector you are buying and pick something with minimal lag and a 240Hz refresh rate.

My Life in Gaming did a few episodes about retro gaming on a projector. If you're playing re-released or remastered retro games from a modern console, you'll generally be fine if you optimize for the same things you'd want from a good TV (input lag, response time, brightness, etc.).

If you want to run a real retro console through a scaler, though, you're going to have a tougher time.

Thanks for the input! Yea the retro stuff was definitely a big concern. Like I said, I’ve never tried it and I figured with all of the different things I’d have to do to get them actually hooked up to the projector it would throw something off. But I’ll check out those episodes you’re talking about!

Thanks! That one projector is awesome, but super expensive. but that’s the cost of a great projector. Obviously the lag is the biggest thing when it comes to playing retro stuff, so finding the best one for that will be clutch

In high school, we had an analog projector that was so janky, you had to aim and focus each of the three colored lenses individually.

But I bet the input lag on it was awesome.
