Let's discuss Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 5!

New Slim consoles are definitely a welcomed change since the original PS5 is so awkward and clunky...

That said I have zero plans to upgrade. Almost 3 years strong, and I don't plan on replacing my Series X or PS5 until the Series Z and PS6 respectively raspberry

I really don’t see a difference in the size. Maybe it needs to be put side by side to the original system though to see the difference.

So dumb for the slim to not have a drive and be more expensive. In the past the slim models were a cost savings to Sony to produce. So if things just cost more to make, I get it, but why did they even bother making this and not just carry on with the OG digital?

This is their crappy way of having a price increase without directly saying they’re having a price increase. Oh look new sexy design but at more money with less incentives. Look at the shiny keys! Meh. Next they’ll do a disc slim with no SSD for $549.

Well yeah, but why do that when you can charge more and then upcharge the upgrade path moving forward?

In all seriousness the bluray drive being modular is actually huge. So many PS3s (and I'm presuming PS4s) just end up in the junkyard when the optical drive takes a crap. Now, presuming Sony continues manufacturing them, you can just swap in a new one as needed because the system was designed to let you do that. Actually gigantic.

So far my PS5 is working perfectly so no need to buy that. It didnt change much either. I was expecting it to be cheaper than the current though.
IMO $400 would have been a good price for holidays.

But what do I know....people will buy it anyway.

I wonder if the Pro model will revert to the size of the original PS5.

It’ll be bigger if it’s like the PS4 Pro compared to the regular PS4.

To be fair, Sony has been making a lot of anti-consumer pro corporation decisions as of late. Need I remind everyone of the recent PS+ price hike?

Anyone played Oxenfree II yet? Honestly didn't think I'd play another game this year after spending 200 hours with Baldur's Gate 3, but I'm really in the mood to play an adventure game today.

I kinda like that Ice Blue color. Reminds me of the Ice Blue Nintendo64 that I wanted but could never get my hands on. I won't spend $70 on those things though, it feels overpriced for what it is.

Oh it's absolutely n64 inspired. The Facebook ad I saw had Mario music and quotes in it.

Using a combo of blue and orange looks sweet.

Agreed, it's a bit pricey. You also gotta get the lights, so it makes it $100.

Some solid marketing

Do you guys think there's any chance of the Spiderman dualsense coming back into stock anywhere? Would love one but seems like maybe that's it, since the game is out now

I think it’ll come back in a few weeks or a month. If it stays in stock is a different question altogether, though.

I’m thinking about getting that DualSense Edge controller. $200 is STEEP but if it’s anywhere near as good as the Xbox Elite, I’m probably going to jump at some point. Anyone here have or use one?

Same boat, been waiting for the edge. Either a deal, or a different color (would really like a black or blue one).

I didn’t even think of different colors. That sounds great. I’d totally grab a pink or black one to go with my regular black or pink DualSense controllers. It’d also be cool if they would do the whole customization thing like Microsoft does, because that’s a great idea. I don’t know if it makes a ton of money for them, but I love the idea.

Spider-Man 2 is pretty impressive so far. The first boss fight was really well done. Somehow, the traversal is even better than before (which didn’t seem possible).

I take back everything I said. This development is literally retarded. I cannot imagine what they were thinking, other than "Well this won't be immediately obvious by looking at it and eventually people will forget that this physical medium drive is still technically DRM, so it's fine"

Physical-only Andys get precisely what they deserve. I'm out of sympathy, you're being played by LRG, you're being played by Sony, you're being played by everyone.

Calm down buddy. It's probably a firmware update or something to prevent naughty people from doing naughty, anti copyright stuff to it.

They're doing it so people don't insert hacked bluray drives into the system but the result is the same. Once the servers are down, this is a brick to hold your door open. A $550 brick in this case. With 30% less volume than the system that will end up working longer.

The only upside is now on a timer. The end result is purely negative. If you're buying physical PS5/PS4 games to play them after the servers are down, you should never be buying a slimline system. Drive is now a temporary media interface.

Just slim, fat models don't have removable drives so they don't need to police anything.

If this is all true then the PS5 fat disc models will become valuable gems. Time to hold onto those for dear life.

Game preservation for ps4 gen onwards is a joke anyways since all games require updates. They may even need system updates as well. LRG is a scam.

The funny thing is if they can reprint the code on physical media then it’s preserved already.

A generation or two out will never be able to go back and play this era of games via physical media. They're future proofing themselves for ongoing digital sales and re-releasing games 32 times. Basically, catching up with Nintendo.

Day 1 patches effectively prevent totally offline preservation outside of piracy.

Most games are unplayable/extremely broken without patches. I just prefer discs over digital for consoles cause the sales aren't nearly as good as Steam.

Sony has never been excited about BC or preserving previous gen experiences on new systems. PS2 couldn't play all PSX titles, PS3 was only BC for a little while, PS4 wasn't at all, and PS5 feels like it sloppily shoe-horned it in only because MS made such a big deal about it.

If a PS5 Pro comes out and no longer played PS4 discs, I honestly wouldn't be surprised. I also wouldn't be terribly interested.

I'll buy digital if it's a $10 or less console game (not worth resale), or if it's a game I will play a ton over time like Diablo 3. Most of the games I play are one and done, so resale value is important. If digital games had transferrable licenses I probably would stop buying physical.

I'm not a huge Alan Wake fan but I would like to play AW2. But there is zero chance I'm going to do $60 (digital only) for it.

Yeah I didn't like seeing that they were making a semi major game like that digital only. Hope it's not a trend.

They said it’s to keep costs down from $70 by going all digital for AW2. I think personally that’s a cop out. $70 games are just morbidly obese. They drop in price like a month or two post launch anyway below $60. Mortal Kombat 1 is already below $60 on Amazon for example. It’s all a sham to squeeze as much sales as possible in the first couple of months me thinks.

Some of that extra profit they'll see would be offset by people that would want the game but only buys physical I would think, like Anxiouz.
