For me, it's exactly that mechanic that opens up options in the game. When your starting hand includes your best champion, do you bulldoze everything else to get it on the board ASAP? Or do you chalk it up to a bad draw and start playing your commons, discarding the champion for magic and hoping the situation is better when you draw the next one? Either of those options could work depending on your opponent's faction and play style.
In Magic: The Gathering, you get to draw one card, and play up to one land per turn (unless you play a card to do more of that). Too many lands? You're fudged. No lands? Even more fudged. Wrong lands? Yep, fudged again. A bad starting hand is absolutely crippling in that game, to the point where after the first couple of turns you already know you've lost.
Dumping cards to pay costs is also what makes Summoner Wars a quick 20 minute game instead of a longer one, because those decks run out really quickly!
I'm excited to try out the new factions that just released... got my shipping confirmation a day or two ago from Plaid Hat.
