OG Batman movie post:

So, for other folks who watch stupid superhero stuff, Rank! Those! Stupid! Batman movies!!! I don't expect everyone to have seen all the ones on my list but if you've seen any, share your lists in the thread. Or don't, jerk.

GTZ's favorite is Batman Begins. This is indisputable.

1. The Dark Knight
image
Classic. Iconic Joker, great adaptation of Two-Face. Batman's mythos in the Nolan trilogy took its most interesting turn with the ending with Batman's metaphorical sacrifice. It was the ultimate grounded approach at a Batman movie, finding perfect ways to integrate those comic book moments.

2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
image
The only animated Batman movie to get a theatrical release is still one of the best. I'm huge into Batman: The Animated Series, and this movie is one of the best "entires" in that series and just one of the best takes on Batman in general.

3. Batman Returns
image
Completely off nostalgia alone. This was among my favorite movies as a kid and remains a favorite Christmas movie. Michael Keaton had great nuance, especially as Bruce Wayne. Danny DeVito's Penguin was as memorable as it was gross. It wasn't a particularly great movie and it hasn't aged well, but I'll always love it.

4. Batman Begins
image
Really dug the subtle, grounded approach of this movie - it was easily the most grounded of the Nolan movies. I'm a big fan of Ra's Al Ghul and, while I would have liked a legitimately immortal take on the character, Liam Neeson's man-in-the-shadows-creating-a-myth version was great for this universe.

5. Batman (1989)
http://www.therobotspajamas.com/wp-content/uploads...
Another classic, the logo to this movie is etched into my nostalgia goggles for all-time. Nicholson's Joker is a legend at this point, and again, Keaton was fun as a straight-faced Batman.

6. The LEGO Batman Movie
image
Will Arnett as the voice of Batman rules. All the cameos, both voice-wise and character-wise, were great. It was a fun spoof on Batman movies in general, with things kids and adults could both like.

7. The Dark Knight Rises
image
Great way to top off the Nolan trilogy, but a little lesser than the other movies. I love Tom Hardy's Bane - even the voice. He came off sinister and brutal, and it was great to see Nolan so closely adapt the Knightfall stuff from the comics. That gets points alone. It did go a little long, and the third act was a little bit of a let down, but still a fun time.

8. Batman: The Movie
image
Like the LEGO Batman movie, this one is great for a few laughs. Adam West's dumbed-down "comic story" Batman was so much fun, and the colors of this movie were great. And then there's the bomb scene, which may be my single favorite Batman scene ever just for the sheer absurdity.

9. Man of Tomorrow (BvS fan edit)
image
You'll see where BvS actually ends up, but I dug this fan edit as it seamlessly meshed both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. While a lot of the problems were still there (especially in the majority BvS section), I was in awe at how well the edits to make one epic Batman/Superman movie worked out - as well as the edits that did fix plot points.

10. Batman Forever
image
Underrated in my opinion, because a lot of people would rank this as far down as Batman & Robin which is an insult. This wasn't a great movie by any means, and Tommy Lee Jones' awful take on Two-Face was just a poor-man's Batman 89' Joker, but Jim Carrey as Riddler was cool and the Robin origin scene was fun. The ending was awful, Robin being a grown ass man was awful, and Kilmer's Batman was forgettable. But I still thought the movie was okay.

11. 1940's Batman serials
image
I'll just count both of the serialized theater series in one spot since they're decently obscure nowadays. These episodes were on TV on Christmas day when I was a kid, and I remember watching it from my Batman: The Animated Series tent that I got that morning. Fun to re-watch every now and then for that alone, but it's real awkward seeing some of the subject matter.

14. Batman & Robin
image
If this list were ranked for comedy, this may beat out both Batman '66 AND the LEGO Batman movie. But alas. Clooney was phoning it in completely, Robin was still an adult, Batgirl was cringey, Mr. Freeze was gosh darn perfect and the Poison Ivy/Bane duo were the worst.

13. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Tomorrow
image
This movie was awful. Affleck's Batman was just about the only thing I dug about it. But just the performance and look itself. The writing for Batman, besides Bruce Wayne's initial hesitance toward Superman, was pretty awful. Having him climb on a ceiling the first time we see him, his whole Martha schtick, his willingness to main (even if it was fun to watch).

14. Suicide Squad
image
Does this movie count? Mostly Batman villains, the Joker/Harley Quinn combo and a short Batman cameo. I'll count it, but the movie sucks so this entry pretty much just exists to reiterate that.

1. Anything with Phil Hartman
2. Anything with Christopher Walken
3. Anything 90's with Alec Baldwin
4. Wayne's World
5. Tie between "you liekda sauce, "lay off me I'm starving," and "Da Bears."

Honestly, for me, I find very little outside the 90's to be funny. It's strange. It must be some nostalgia thing. I mean, I love Steve Martin, Dan Ackroyd, and Chevy Chase, but I don't find most of the 70's stuff I've watched that funny. The 80's was better but still hit and miss. Aside from Bill Hader, I've barely liked anything post-2000's aside from a skit here and there (which still add up to several).

SNL has def been through some golden years and some lesser years, but its definitely given birth to some classics that transcended the show. loved that period in the 90s and ferrel and sandler and tracy morgan, cheri oteri and molly shannon were on there.

cowbell
waynes world
the blues brothers and lonely island (not really a skit i guess, i suppose those are more like the musical shorts or whatever)
sprockets
spartan spirts
roxbury guys
schweddy balls
wild and crazy guys
most of the stuff by farley and spade

and that one about the VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER

Literally anything with Chris Farley in it. That guy was a legend, and was taken way way to soon!

Matt Foley Motivational Speaker is still one of the funniest segments in SNL history (in my opinion obviously). The first one is obviously the best, but his slapstick humor was hilarious in all of them. Defined his career (for better or for worse).

Costars couldn't keep a straight face. The whole scene is just perfect!

Debbie Downer at DW is funny as hell, but I think I only laugh as much as I do because the cast keeps breaking. All of the other Debbie Downer bits are average.

Here's my list:

1. Matt Foley (the first one with Christina Applegate hosting)
2. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood (Eddie Murphy at his finest)
3. Tina Fey as Sarah Palin being interviewed by Katie Couric played by Amy Poehler
4. Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer
5. Chippendale Auditions (Farley and Patrick Swayze)

If I was listing my favorite cast members, which would be really hard to do, it would look something like this:

1. Chris Farley
2. Eddie Murphy
3. Kate McKinnon
4. Bill Hader
5. Dana Carvey
6. Adam Sandler
7. Will Ferrell
8. Mike Myers
9. Tina Fey
10. Amy Poehler
HM - Norm MacDonald was the absolute best Weekend Update host, but he didn't do too much else that was all that great.

I also need to mention Che and Jost. They are really funny together on Weekend Update.

Also, I know my list is seriously lacking pre 1985. I know Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, John Belushi, and Gilda Radner were all amazing, but that was before the time I watched, so they don't compare to my top 10 in my mind.

I feel like Norm's style of comedy wasn't very well-suited for most of SNL, but yeah he was definitely the best Weekend Update host.

New topic yall. With 3D All-Stars and Mario's 35th Anniversary this year, suppose it makes sense to...... Rank the 3D Mario Games!! (That you've played.) Not counting "New" Super Mario Bros series.... I think most folks consider that "2.5D" due to the 2D backgrounds.

Mine is probably controversial but whatev, going best-to-worst:

1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. Super Mario 64
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. Super Mario Odyssey
6. Super Mario 3D World

Have never played 3D Land, never had a 3DS.

Explanations:

I hated the forced motion controls of the Wii, but Galaxy was such a good game that those controls seemed completely warranted. Easily the best usage of the motion controls. I have wildly nostalgic memories of 64, but I also have wildly nostalgic memories of Sunshine and the Gamecube-era was my prime "coming of age" years where as N64 was still firmly in the ol' childhood, so Sunshine barely squeaks out 64. I still remember getting to the Pianta village level and just feeling... "cozy"? I dunno, I liked how the NPCs seemed like actual NPCs for whatever reason. Sunshine also has my favorite 3D Mario levels, the "Secret of" levels where FLUUD is taken away and it's just straight unforgiving platforming.

Galaxy 2 is still incredible, but the nostalgia isn't there like it is with the top 3, I didn't like the hub world as much as the first Galaxy, and it just seemed like an extension of Galaxy when I first played it. Interested to give it another go nowadays, maybe I'll appreciate it more.

My feelings about Odyssey are well-known, it was way too easy, the platforming seemed to take a backseat for open world exploration (which isn't something I come to a Mario game for), and some of the worlds and characters (New Donk City, the Dark Souls-style world, the T-Rex, etc) seemed mega anti-Mario and out of place. Still, Odyssey was more memorable than 3D World imo (the 2D bits definitely helped that out). As cool as the idea for 3D World is, I really feel like it took the NSMB route of just going through the normal "NSMB" motions but with more camera angles.

None of these games are bad, but the top 3 (and the 4th honestly) are the ones I can play to no end.

1. Galaxy 2
2. Galaxy
3. 3d World
4. Sunshine
5. Odyssey
6. 3d Land
7. 64

I hate 64. The camera sucks and it felt so empty. 3d Land was forgettable, and I didn't care much for their focus on the "3d jumps". Odyssey was meh for a lot of the reasons Jaw said. Sunshine gets bumped up above Odyssey due to the levels without FLUDD, those were platforming goodness. 1-3 Are the only 3d Mario games I would call great. Honestly the series was dead to me until Galaxy came out. I only bought it cause I was killing time at a Gamestop and tried the demo.
I'd have to replay 1-3 to get the true order, but going off memory that's my order.

This is gonna be hard...

1) Super Mario Odyssey - Part of the reason I love this game so much is because me and my kids all played through it at the same time (taking turns). It's a really great memory of mine. It's not just that though, it's an amazing game. The graphics are beautiful, the music was great, the worlds are so fun to explore, and the controls are amazing. I do wish it has been harder, but it does have a fair amount of more challenging sections later in the game that most people seem to ignore. Oh yeah, the mini-games and races were a lot of fun to compete in.

2) Super Mario 3D World - This game also holds a special place in my heart, it was the first game my daughter really got into and played with me. We played through it multiple times, even had an account where we beat every level with every character (except Champions Road), and got every gold flagpole. I don't necessarily like the more linear approach of this game MORE than the more open styles, I just like both and hope they continue to make both. This game doesn't get enough credit for being one of the more challenging Mario games, maybe the most. Not just Champion's Road at the end, but most of the star/mushroom/flower levels are pretty challenging. Also, the soundtrack is fantastic.

3) Super Mario Galaxy - I tried this game once a few years after it came out but for whatever reason, couldn't get into it. Gave it another chance before Odyssey and ended up loving it. So many great levels and great variance of challenges. Also, an amazing soundtrack.

4) Super Mario Galaxy 2 - I feel like this game is probably a bit better than the first. But, I played it RIGHT after Galaxy 1 and I think I was a bit burnt out. I should have waited longer between the two.

1-4 are all extremely close, and were hard to rank any over the others. It's a steep drop off to the next 3.

5) Super Mario 3D Land - This game was ok, but 3D World improved nearly every aspect of it.

6) Super Mario 64 - I loved this game back in the day, but it hasn't aged well. Even back then, the controls and camera were super frustrating, and they stand out far worse now. I'd love to see a new Mario game similar to the style of this one, but with Odyssey controls, that would be amazing.

7) Super Mario Sunshine - I've tried this game a couple different times now and can't get into it. The controls and platforming are just so frustrating. If I had played it when it first came out, following up SM64, I probably would have liked it. But going back to it many years later, it just didn't age well.

1. Super Mario 64 - Nostolgia and timing are a huge factor. While the game hasn't aged as well as I'd like to admit, it was revolutionary, and paved the 3D platforming genre.
2. Super Mario Odyssey - Mind blowingly good game! Tons I would like changed, but I don't believe in the concept of a perfect game.
3. Super Mario Galaxy - I wasn't sold on this one until I played it. Very linear gameplay, but I loved the hub world.
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - More of the same, with added bonuses. The linear map was a downfall for me, and the added Yoshi parts didn't do a whole lot for me.
5. Super Mario 64 DS - I'm counting this, and I'm not putting it at the bottom. I have fond memories playing this back in 04. This version's bonus stars and different playable characters make it worth playing on it's own. It's not a "better" version, but it's a reimagining.
6. Super Mario 3D Land - Was another one of those games that came at a good time. Was very good as a one off 3DS title, at launch. Still holds up as a good handheld game.
7. Super Mario Sunshine - Yeah it's different, and second last on my list, but fudge it. I did enjoy this as a kid, and look forward to my Switch replay.
8. Super Mario 3D World - Everything from the empty environments, generic "Mario" artstyle, and slow feeling gameplay, made this my least favorite 3D Mario title. I'm looking forward to trying the Switch port, as the new Bowser's Fury and speed adjustments might increase my thoughts.

Honorable Mention: Wario World - What? It's a good game... WAHHH

I was going to say that I agreed with lpeters, then I remembered how excellent Galaxy 1 & 2 were.
I'd rank them as
Galaxy 1
Galaxy 2
I guess Sunshine, didn't get into that much
64 really didn't care for it at the time, have tried it a time or 2 since and not crazy about it still.
Didn't own a 3DS, nor Wii U or Switch yet.

Mario 64 seems especially embarrassing. I had a friend that owned it and maybe if you put all the time together it's more then 20-minutes, but I have zero nostalgia for the game. At that time we were playing a lot more multiplayer games like 1080 Snowboarding, Goldeneye, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and Mario Kart 64. The games I played when not with friends were the two Zelda games, mostly Ocarina of Time. I didn't really play much during the GameCube era and even today I use my GameCube mostly to play Game Boy Advance games. Then with the Wii it was back to multiplayer games. We'd play Guitar Hero, Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, and Wii Sports. Mario 3D Word seems a lot like New Super Mario Bros in that you can all play together, so that's the game we've played the most.

I totally forgot to include 64 DS. I threw it at #5 on my list. I think between the rest of this year and 2021, I need to go back and replay all of these and make my definitive order. smile

No order. I'm going to pick random ones I like off the top of my head and not like all-time amazing quotes or anything (although there may be some of those in here)

1. "Wolfman's got nards! - The Monster Squad

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BX6KrC-PHcQ

2. "When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus." Or that, "Virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice." - Kingdom of Heaven

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n_JfUsCJK_4

3. "For Frodo" - Lord of the Rings trilogy (honestly, I could have chosen 10 just from these movies, easily)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ufhcNPXD9Hc

4. "I have crossed oceans of time to find you" - Dracula (hear me out, yes, this movie had its cheesy moments, but Gary Oldman was amazing)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l8pZfdv3BWg

5. Pancakewhich - I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (way too long to post the whole thing)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iol4EJE-Fws

6. Shindler's speech from the end the film - Schindler's List

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz9_IEHM7Go

7. "Wanting people to listen, you can't just tap them on the shoulder anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer, and then you'll notice you've got their strict attention." - Seven (I couldn't find a video of the actual quote, but here's part of the same scene)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8vq_k0yqq88

8. "As zombies began to outnumber humans, well that's when you had to cut all emotional ties. If the girls in your neigborhood are now fudgeed up little monsters, well maybe it's time to stop driving car pool." - Zombieland

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RW4ADt4YSy0

9. "It's been Jam'd!" .... "Only one man would dare give me the raspberry!" - Spaceballs

I skipped a Halloween rank topic because we did mega rankings for the past 2 years, but usually for Thanksgiving we do food-related rankings.

THIS year we're doing Top 5 (or 10) Thanksgiving Specials. I feel like Thanksgiving time doesn't get the same attention Halloween or Christmas does as far as specials or themed movies go. So just post which Thanksgiving-related TV episodes or movies you like to try to squeak in every year.

1. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving My all-time favorite Thanksgiving special. I sorta hate the Thanksgiving dinner they eat haha, but the animation in this Peanuts special is probably my favorite out of all the primary holiday specials. And it's just such a simple "turn off your brain" cartoon, I love it.
2. Friends - The One With the Football Honestly a really fun episode of a now-dated but still really fun sitcom. I love getting a look into these characters' lives as they try to balance a Thanksgiving dinner with a high-stakes football game in the park. Also prob my favorite episode of the entire show.
3. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - The Gang Squashes Their Beefs Like the Christmas special, this episode is just chaotic and ridiculous. That's this series summed up regardless. Just so much fun.
4. South Park - Black Friday I'll count the entire 3-part arc for this spot. A fun Game of Thrones parody that plays off the Black Friday craze taking advantage of Thanksgiving's holiday bump.
5. South Park - Starvin' Marvin Whatev gotta include this one. I love Black Friday but Starvin' Marvin is a legitimately iconic (if not super problematic and edgy) episode of South Park. But that's the point of the show and I crack up at this episode anytime I watch it.
6. Hey Arnold! - Arnold's Thanksgiving Such an underrated special and a really touching one. Loved seeing Arnold and Helga bond and seeing their teacher's life outside of the school was sort of heartbreaking but also very satisfying, narrative-wise.
7. Cheers - Thanksgiving Orphans This show is perfect sitcom. If there's one show with a laugh track I default to (that isn't classic 90s Nickelodeon), it's this one. Great food fight scene in this episode, especially with the "appearance" of Norm's wife Vera.
8. The Wonder Years - The Ties That Bind Just a classic story, and an incredible representation of life around this series' time period. The "nuclear family" wasn't always all it was cracked up to be and this show proved that time and time again, but especially in this episode. Classic.
9. This is America, Charlie Brown - The Mayflower Voyagers As is the case with most adaptations of this time period... this one is wildly inaccurate and flies in the face of actual history, opting instead for the US textbook version of events. Still, I love the Peanuts and this was a childhood favorite. Not as good as my #1 but still fun enough.
10. The Office - WUPHF.com This episode isn't 100% a "Thanksgiving" episode which is why it's my number 10 - but it does take place around that holiday and so I'll count it. It's one that I love to watch around this time of year due to Dwight's hay festival. Shows one of the best characters of the series at his all-time most petty, but also all-time funniest.

OKAY POST YOURS if you have any...

...also any suggestions for a Christmas ranking topic? I've done a mega-thread for Christmas the past 2 years (movies, specials, books, gifts, etc etc) so I have no idea what to do this year other than just repost updated choices for those topics.

1) Friends: The episode with Brad Pitt (can't think of the name of it ).. I think this one was funnier than the football one...
2) Simpsons: Bart vs. Thanksgiving..
3) HIMYM: Slapsgiving...
4) Brooklyn 99: All the Thanksgiving episodes are funny
5) Community: Cooperative Escapism in Family Relations - Jeff reunites with his dad, everyone else goes to Shirleys and hides in the garage.

I don't really know of too many Thanksgiving special shows. I've always liked Everybody Loves Raymond, and the Thanksgiving episode where Amy's parents kill the bird is a really good one. The only Thanksgiving movie I can really think of is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. That one is yearly viewing in my house.

Only Friends comes to mind for Thanksgiving episodes. My wife and I have had a Thanksgiving tradition for years now where we watch through all of them on Thanksgiving night. My top 5 are:

1) The One With the Rumor
2) The One With the Late Thanksgiving
3) The One Where Ross Got High
4) The One With Chandler In A Box
5) The One With All The Thanksgivings

The Middle also has some pretty good Thanksgiving episodes.

Not an uncommon opinion at all, most of the holiday specials barely have a plot and aren't as jovial as others. That's what turns some folks off to them, but as a huge Peanuts fan, that's what I like about them (and the other specials/comics). I enjoy that they're mellow and relaxed compared to other cartoons, I love the color palettes used and the gradient sky backgrounds, I enjoy how the kids aren't idealized as constantly-happy, fun-loving characters to the point that the main character is almost always depressed (probably clinically, tbh). They're not funny in an "LOL" way, more of a sarcastic way if that makes sense - which is honestly due to the more "sad" or just indifferent tone that a lot of them have. I dunno, I just find them off-beat and relatable.

They're definitely not for everyone, I totally get why some people dislike them, but for those of us who do, there are few cartoons that we look forward to more during the holidays.

Never liked Charlie Brown Cartoons. Charlie is a fudgein mope and that dog lucy is a horrible person. It was cynical before the whole world got cynical, so in one regard it was ahead of its time but its just felt sad and mean. I didn’t appreciate the early introduction to melancholy from a cartoon.

Alriighty yall, new topic:

Top 10 Live Action Movies of the 1990s

I'll do other decades eventually... already did 2010s (though that was a list that included both Live Action and Animated). There will come a time for 80s and 2000s, and probably 50s-70s as one single Top 10. But for now, let's go back to a simpler time and list our 10 favorite live action movies of the 90s, 1990-1999.

Try to make this a definitive list. We've already had a "guilty pleasures" list, and the 90s put out a lot of mine, but let's try to keep this to movies that we actually, unashamedly love and/or feel deserve the recognition. AND GO!

No real order, just my Top 10:

1. Goodfellas
2. Shawshank Redemption
3. Good Will Hunting
4. Jurassic Park
5. Dogma
6. Rushmore
7. Titanic
8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
9. October Sky
10. Clerks

Top 10 Honorable Mentions:
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Clueless
- The Truman Show
- The Sixth Sense
- Batman Returns
- The Blair Witch Project
- Wayne's World
- The Fifth Element
- Robin Hood: Men in Tights
- The Crucible

Welp that was hard. Really my Top 20 because I could watch literally any of those at any time and be content, but whatev.

You can't rank music videos without including any Michael Jackson, especially Thriller. Black or White and Remember the Time were literally events when they were released.

The other famous one that everybody loves was Smells Like Teen Spirit, but I never really liked that video. I always loved Cryin by Aerosmith because Alicia Silverstone was hot as hell back in the 90s.

With the Snyder Cut dropping finally, I figured there's no better time than now to...

Rank the DCEU Movies

Doing it in this thread as opposed to its own because I feel like there aren't nearly as many folks who have seen these movies compared to the MCU stuff.

Now, I know it's not technically called the DCEU anymore (or never really was), but I'm counting any major live action DC movie since Man of Steel released. Continuity be damned.

---Movies I Loathe---
11. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - One of the worst movies I've ever seen, period.
10. Suicide Squad - Only ranks better than BvS because it's a lot shorter, otherwise the studio tampering doomed this one hard.
9. Justice League - Very bad, painfully bad tbh. Some of the most pitiful CG I've ever seen, and the hack Frankenstein job was done in a way that almost every single change was noticeable even without having seen the Snyder Cut beforehand.
---Movie I Haven't Seen but Already Like More Than the Previous 3---
8. Birds of Prey - I have a feeling I'd enjoy this if I watched it, but haven't felt the pull to do so yet.
---Movies I Enjoy---
7. Wonder Woman 1984 - I thought it was fun, sue me. Too long, very inconsistent in spots, and some real dumb story elements (Steve Trevor body-snatching for example), but it was fun enough to turn my mind off for a while and not get offended by it.
6. Man of Steel - I used to hate this movie until BvS came out and it looked like gold in comparison. Since then, it has actually grown on me to an extent and I can throw it on and appreciate it for what it is.
5. Joker - This movie is wholly disconnected from the rest, but it's still a live action DC movie so whatever. Joker isn't worse than anything previously mentioned but that's mainly because 11-6 are either only fun enough if you don't think too hard or just straight up bad. I do feel Joker is one of the most overrated movies of the past decade.
4. Wonder Woman - A competently made movie that may be sort of boring in spots but otherwise is a real fun action movie with a character long-overdue for the solo treatment. Kinda devolved to normal superhero fare in the third act but that didn't detriment it at all.
---Movies I Really Like---
3. Zack Snyder's Justice League - The more I stew on this movie, the more I like it. There's still some messiness in the story and not every beat is as satisfying as I'd hope, but the "epic fantasy" tone this movie integrates seamlessly into the narrative is a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre. A return to form for Snyder imo, reminding me of a lot of 300 and Watchmen.
2. Aquaman - Pleasantly surprised with Aquaman. It was also messy in spots and just straight goofy in others, but there are some legit great action sequences and I love the visuals throughout. Mamoa made me care about a character nobody cares about, so that's something.
1. Shazam! - Another pleasant surprise and the most earnest movie of the list. Just a relatively small-scale superhero story with "coming of age" thrown in and one of the more satisfying third acts out of the lot.

I can easily say my top 3, the only ones I "really like", were all movies I had absolutely zero expectations for going in and never cared about while they were being developed. ZSJL to a lesser extent because the hooplah around that has always interested me, but I didn't actually care to see it until it was about to release. But Aquaman and Shazam! are two movies I never expected to care about and they're easily the best of the bunch, imo.

Interesting to me that you said this. A friend of mine was so disappointed with Man of Steel when it was first released. He exited the theater saying something like "If I took a video camera and videod a snail in the desert, I could make a better movie than Man of Steel." Fast forward X amount of time, and now he likes the movie. Occasionally we'll tease him about him having hating it and now switching over. He says he knows and apologizes. :)

Yah it for sure isn't as bad as the first time I saw it, but there are definitely still things to dislike about it. My top complaints are:

1. Muted color palette. Just came off as Christopher Nolan-lite. I prefer Superman stories to be colorful and bright considering it's still possible to have a "dark" story without removing colors from the frame.
2. Over-indulgent ending. I can give the neck-break a pass but there really was no need for THAT much city-wrecking for the climax fight. It was like they knew they had the CG budget and just had to cram it all into that battle. If they wanted to explain it away as Superman being too "new" to the superhero game, they should have made that inner conflict more apparent once he was an adult. He seemed competent enough to steer the fight away from the major city, but Snyder seemed to just want to have the big effect-laden climax.
3. Pa Kent's death. Just silliness at that point, but a moment that was supposed to be poignant.

Otherwise, I can look past that stuff for the most part and just appreciate the rest of the movie while it's on. It would still probably rank sorta low on my "superhero movie ranking master list" if I were to make one, but at least it'd be better than the majority of these DC movies haha

Wait a minute. Just realized something. I actually rewatched Man of Steel last year. It's Superman Returns that I haven't seen in years. Not sure why I mixed them up.

Now that I think about it, the colors definitely were somewhat muted. I get what they were going for, but I don't think the duller look is necessary. I get it, but it's not a must.

I bet you're on to something with that whole city destruction thing being related to the budget. Big effects and all. It's in the budget, so why not. It was a bit over the top though. Just a bit wink

Wonder Woman is definitely my favorite, but even that movie is just pretty good, I don't love it or anything. Plus, I'd be lying if I said that much of my enjoyment of the movie wasn't simply because Gal Gadot is in it. I haven't seen Man of Steel in a long time but I remember it being ok. Justice League and Suicide Squad are close. Neither were as bad as I expected based on how people talked about them, but neither were particularly good either. Batman v Superman was total garbage, I hated it so much.

Haven't seen yet:
Aquaman
Shazam!
Birds of Prey
Wonder Woman 1984
Zack Snyder's Justice League

Don't want to see:

That’s part of Bruce’s “Knightmare” vision that he originally sees in BvS, though I’m not entirely sure WHY he can see the future in his dreams. Snyder had a whole JL trilogy planned out, and the sequel was going to be set in that dystopian future. In that Joker scene, Joker asks how many universes Bruce is willing to destroy because he refuses to just die, so it’s possible something was going to happen in JL 2 or 3 to explain why Bruce saw visions. It’s insinuated that something Bruce does leads to Lois getting killed, which makes Superman snap.

Cyborg sees the same future too, which makes more sense because he’s able to tap into the Mother Box being a cyborg and all. He’s the one who sees an image of Superman mourning over a dead body, which is probably Lois.

And if you’re just asking why the frig is that particular group of characters together, who knows!? We’ll probably never find out unfort.

10. Justice League - Yeah, it's that bad.
9. Batman vs Superman - There are so many problems with this movie. Don't get me started.
8. Shazam - I don't get the love. I thought it was silly.
7. Wonder Woman 1984 - I was entertained even if there are some really dumb character choices, and the whole Diana's boyfriend possessing another human thing was obviously a poor choice.
6. Suicide Squad - I actually liked this movie except for the Joker. I understand the critiques, especially when comparing it to Guardians of the Galaxy, but it was a fun movie. Harley Quinn was fantastic! I liked the setup a lot. I think the middle dragged a bit, and I didn't really like the ending, but overall I liked this one.
5. Aquaman - This was a fun movie. I thought the Mantis stuff looked like a Power Rangers battle, and that entire subplot seemed a bit pointless. Overall though, it was a much better movie than I ever thought we would get from Aquaman.
4. Birds of Prey - More Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn without Jared Leto's Joker. This was another fun one.
3. Wonder Woman - Good movie, not great. I don't know why this one got so much love.
2. Man of Steel - I love Superman. This was not the best movie or when a good interpretation of him, but it was still a really good movie. I have rewatched this the most of every DCEU film.
1. Joker - I don't think this counts, but of the topic creator can add it, then I can too. This is a fantastic movie and light years beyond every other movie on this list.

If Joker counts, then we should add in every Batman movie ever. Also, I still haven't finished the ZS Justice League yet, so I can't add that one.

@bonham2 Joker counts for this particular list because it was released after Man of Steel, which was the start of the “DCEU” (or whatever they officially called it). I know it’s out of continuity but it’s a DC film that was released during the “connected universe” era even if it’s not part of that connected universe, and is so far the only DC movie released since MOS without connection to the others that were released since. All the other Batman movies came pre-DCEU.

So I finished ZS Justice League. The original was #10 on my list, but this probably deserves #3 after Man of Steel. Why is it that the film has practically the same plot but this version is SO MUCH BETTER?!?

I think this feels like like a Justice League movie, whereas the original release was a bunch of people Thai didn't know each other getting their asses bat until Superman showed up to save the day. In this one, Batman is a bad ass. In the original, he is weak and completely unnecessary. In this one, Cyborg is awesome with a real backstory. In the original, he is completely pointless. In this one, Wonder Woman is owned by Steppenwolf. In this one, she is just as strong as him and holding her own. I especially like how they will fought TOGETHER with Superman, instead of how Superman just saves the day in the original. I think Barry's run around the block in this one was stupid, but at least he served a purpose (turning back the clock). In the original, he's just saving people (that aren't even present in this version). So many things didn't make sense in the original (what the motherboxes were, what was Steppenwolf's purpose, how they found him in his remote location, etc.). This does such a better job of explaining things. The epilogue was a waste though.

It was a dream but it was also a legit vision, and it totally was another tease for that “Lois is the key” beat. Cyborg saw similar visions when he tapped into the Mother Box while they were in the Kryptonian ship, including that one of Superman mourning over a body (likely Lois) before Darkseid puts his hand on his shoulder. Snyder planned for 2 other JL movies that would have at least partially taken place in that dystopian Injustice-style setting.

I imagine it would have been explained in one of those movies why Bruce was able to see the visions himself. Either way, it’s my theory that Flash traveled back in time to BvS to warn Bruce that “Lois is the key” and that he meant Bruce should 100% not let Lois die the way she did in his (Flash’s) timeline in order to avoid the whole “evil Superman” schtick.

As for the Epilogue being a “waste”, I don’t necessarily feel that way. I do agree it was all totally tacked on in a weird way, but the scenes were still integral to what would have been if Snyder got to make more movies (even the Joker scene, which wasn’t originally in the Snyder cut).

If I edited this movie, I would have handled those epilogue scenes like this:

1. Insert a slightly shorter version of the Batman/Joker Knightmare scene into the middle of Cyborg’s vision sequence. I’d place it so that the final shot of the epilogue scene (Superman’s menacing red eyes) comes right BEFORE the shot of the dead Lantern lying in front of a silhouetted Superman who’s holding what seems to be a severed head. Even if that severed head didn’t belong to Batman or any of the heroes/villains who appear in that epilogue scene, the visual of seeing Superman holding it RIGHT after he’s seen approaching them would have been a nice hook and add to Cyborg’s newfound apprehension toward bringing Superman back to life. It would also make a bit more sense of why Cyborg’s auto-defense system kicks in right before they fight Superman.

2. Use the montage scene with Cyborg’s father’s narration as the only scene in the actual epilogue section after Part 6, ending with Superman pulling his shirt open to reveal he’s still rocking the black suit. Cut to credits.

3. Make the Lex Luthor/Deathstroke scene the “mid credits” scene, a la the MCU. Have some visual credits first, cut to that Lex scene, then cut to the normal scrolling credits.

4. Finally, I’d subtly fade some Joker dialogue/laughter and maybe even some menacing Superman dialogue in over the end of the scrolling credits, before they SMASH CUT to Bruce waking up from a nightmare. So now it’s not necessarily a Knightmare scene he wakes from (though it could still be), it’s just a suggested nightmare he’s having about the Joker (and/or Superman). From there have the conversation with Martian Manhunter act as the true “after credits” scene.

Just feel like that would have made those scenes work a little more coherently as opposed to just seeming crammed in at the end just for the heck of it.

I sure did. What I didn't want to see was Jared Leto as the Suicide Squad version of the Joker, at least visually. But to be fair, we didn't even see his version of the Joker IN Suicide Squad. We saw clipped scenes that the studio decided were all we were allowed to see, and stripped both the director and the actor of their vision when it came to that character. Mind you this is the same studio that opted for the Whedon cut over the Snyder cut, so their priorities are clearly not ironed out.

It's easy to be salty about his look in Suicide Squad (I definitely was) and no, the couple scenes he was in weren't anything to write home about, but considering Ayer and Leto have both stated that there was enough footage shot for a Joker-centric movie, I'm willing to bet we didn't even get the opportunity to judge his take on the character in full. If the Snyder cut proved anything, it's that crapty editing and removal of key scenes can detriment a performance in major ways. So when it came to JL, I was all-in on giving him another go. I dug the comic accurate jokey-dialogue and classic dark sense of humor. And, thankfully, his look was changed to be less gang-bangery.

Tbh I'd still like to see a movie that uses him more traditionally as opposed to just glorified cameos, but that's likely never going to happen.

Yes and no. I don't think editing made the Justice League characters any better. I think the reshoots really changed Superman's and Aquaman's personalities. Superman was lighter and happier in the original, which never felt right anyway. And Aquaman was too bro-dude for me in the original. That's not editing. That was a directors poor decision.

The stuff we saw of Joker in Suicide Squad was either Jared Leto's vision, the director's vision, or a combination of both. Maybe there's more unseen footage somewhere out there. I have no interest in seeing it. In my opinion, Jared Leto's Joker was the worst part of a movie that I enjoyed for the most part (Suicide Squad).

I meant "editing" in terms of removing key character moments, which Whedon did. He replaced some with worse scenes, for sure, but he also just cut certain performance-driven scenes all together and with no explanation - very similar to what WB did with Joker in Suicide Squad. Cyborg's character moments were removed almost completely from JL, and in turn he came off completely different in Whedon's cut as opposed to Snyder's. One version was one-note and boring, the other was the complete opposite - that was due to the WB's editors removing a performance and Snyder adding the removed material back in.

Like I said, I know the Joker scenes that were actually in Suicide Squad were bad - but really any performance can come off bad when all the scenes offering context for said character are completely removed from a narrative written with said scenes in mind. I'm not trying to sway your opinion on the performance we saw, I agree he ranked real high on the list of bad things about Suicide Squad (I very much did not enjoy the movie), I'm just saying we really didn't see the material that may have helped understand Leto or Ayer's vision a little better and that ZSJL proved just how much of an impact something like that can have on a movie.

I hope Ayer does what Snyder joked about and just leaves his cut of the movie on a thumb drive somewhere random for someone to find. Give it a chance to be seen on the ol' high seas.

NEW TOPIC: Top 10 (or 5) Movies of 2020

This topic could literally just be "new movies you bothered to watch in 2020" due to the major lack of content. My list really is almost every new movie I saw in 2020 and therefore a few of them make the cut by default. A lot of them would have been completely ignored if it weren't for the nearly complete halt of the movie business, but I've done this for every year since 2017 and I'm not about to stop now gosh darnit.

Even though 2020 was a rough year for new releases, I felt obligated. Share your list (if you bothered to watch any new movies last year).

1. Hamilton - I've re-watched this so many times, I've lost count. I know it's not technically a "movie", but it is the "filmed" version of the stage play with camera angles reserved for film so there ya have it. I was somewhat interested in this when it released, but it took my girlfriend forcing me to watch it to finally get me to, and I've been unable to stop since. Just a masterpiece for modern musicals, with a strong (if not entirely historically accurate) story and great performances all around. Some of the catchiest tunes of the past few years easy. For me, it's very easy to listen to an album I enjoy consistently for a few months after discovering it... and Hamilton is no different, there's just an incredibly well put-together play to go along with it.
2. Onward - Easily among my favorite Pixar movies. Maybe not as well-animated as others, but the story and characters make up for that in my opinion. As a major sucker for father/son stories, this one hit me in every single feeling that resides in my body and it has one of the stronger, more meaningful endings out of any Pixar movie.
3. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - I love that this movie came out of absolutely nowhere, with little to no reports of it filming until it was released. While not consistently as funny as the first Borat, I do feel like there are a few moments in this sequel that made me laugh harder than anything in that first one. If this is the last we see of this style movie from Sacha Baron Cohen, he went out on top.
4. Happiest Season - I really dug this Christmas movie. Loved the characters, especially how they avoided normal tropes of the genre and of the subject material itself. Kristen Stewart impressed, Daniel Levy rules in everything, and I'll never complain about seeing Allison Brie in anything.
5. You Cannot Kill David Arquette - David Arquette, staple of the 90s thanks to Scream, enters the world of independent wrestling in an attempt to give back to an industry and its fans that shunned him for like 2 decades, ever since WCW booked him to win their world championship. Real interesting and wacky story. It's not as surreal as a documentary like "The Devil and Daniel Johnston", but there is that element of "I can't believe this guy is real and doing this crap" like that movie.
6. The Old Guard - I remember I was up all night one summer night this past year and decided to start watching this at like 5AM. I couldn't turn it off once I started. Not the best action movie out there but it hit the spot at the time.
7. Da 5 Bloods - Came for one of Chadwick Boseman's final performances, stayed for everything else. Really well directed, had a very unique vibe to it, and while the story sort of jumped around in strange ways, it was definitely entertaining.
8. The Lodge - Super depressing movie but also super atmospheric. I enjoyed the sheer terror the movie conjured without any real supernatural elements or anything of the sort, just a horrifying situation and fear of the unknown.
9. Enola Holmes - Was pleasantly surprised by this, Millie Bobby Brown was great in it. Threw it on with no real knowledge of what it was randomly while I was working one day during lockdown, and couldn't stop watching at times.
10. Wonder Woman 1984 - I thought it was fun if very unbalanced and not too great. Still had a good enough time with it. Can't blame people who disliked it, it was too long and there were a ton of pretty poor story elements involved, but the performances, characters themselves and "classic Christopher Reeves Superman" vibe did enough to keep me hooked.
11. The Last Blockbuster - Eff it... it was 2020, I'm doing 11 movies. This is the only one I didn't watch IN 2020 (just saw it a few weeks ago) but it WAS released in 2020 and to be honest, I like this as much as most movies on this list so there's no reason to leave it off.

Still need to see/finish:
Sonic the Hedgehog, Soul, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Mulan - Saw most of Sonic but still haven't finished, enjoyed what I saw for the most part. The other 3 are movies up my alley that I need to watch, that I have a feeling could have ranked in my "top" list if I had watched them.

All in all, 2020 was definitely the year of "this movie isn't as good as the delayed blockbusters but will at least help pass the time". While I enjoyed them all and think they're all generally at least "good", I wouldn't say I'm in much of a rush to watch most of these again. I've already watched Borat and Onward twice, and have watched Hamilton like 75 times, so 1-3 are safe. And I'll probably watch 4 again around Christmas time, but that's about it. 5 was admittedly pretty great, but it's not really "necessary re-watch" material to me. 6-11 were fun to watch once, but I'd be comfortable if I never sat down with them again (though I'm sure I will with a few eventually).

I'm going to have to try to create a list of movies I've seen first. Okay, I've got that done. I've only seen nine movies from 2020.

1) The Trial of the Chicago Seven
2) Hamilton - It's a great play.
3) Judas and the Black Massiah
4) The Sound of Metal
5) The Father
6) Minari
7) The Croods: A New Age - This was a surprise for me. I really enjoyed it.
8) Tenent - I liked it.
9) Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - Good, but I'm just not a huge Broat fan.
10) Mulan - It was fine.

____

9) Class Action Park - I've already read about the story, so not much new.
10) The Social Dilemma
11) Trolls World Tour - I just didn't like this film all that much.
12) Wonder Woman 1984 - Such a letdown.
13) Nomadland - It's not a documentary, but I enjoyed documentaries on the subject more.
14) Bill & Ted Face the Music - Meh.

On my watchlist: The Father, Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago Seven, Judas The Black Messiah, Minari, The Social Dilemma, One Night In Miami, Impractical Jokers: The Movie, and Soul. Man, I really wish I could go back in time and swap this list for my list of watched movies. After I complete this list, I'd be shocked if more then three of my watched movies remain in my top-ten.

EDIT: I'll try to edit my list as I cross items off my watchlist.

Yeah, I liked the first Trolls movie a lot. Not my favorite, but it was really good. I just really don't see the second as a movie I'd ever need to rewatch. In contrast, I hadn't seen the first Croods movie but was really surprised by the second film. I did see the later in the theater as we rented it out for my nephews birthday party. Maybe that made a difference, but a lot had to do with my expectations going into each. All three of my bottom movies where films where the sequel lowered my opinion of the franchise. The more I think about it it's probably better then Wonder Woman 1984. I just want to force myself to not let 1984 completely ruin that franchise.

Great. That will help me move something else up. That song is probably my earliest memory of emotion. I was four when that movie came out, but I remember the strange mix of happy and sad emotions that song made me feel while watching the movie.

My friends made fun of me, but I bought the Aladdin soundtrack (on cassette). I don't like when things are considered a "boy movie" or "girl movie", but it seems like most males my age would list Aladdin and Lion King as their favorite Disney movies.

To be fair, I JUST watched the Sopranos and then immediately watched the movie, so I didn’t have all that time to become a jaded Sopranos fan who needs to defend the honor of the series haha. I thought the performances taken on their own were great, and I dug the story. Whatev.

Also not shy in acknowledging No Way Home was overall an uneven movie that rose to the heights it did due to nostalgia, so I didn’t find it to be untouchable or anything.

Yah, that’s also possible. It’s just been my experience that most folks I’ve talked to about it can’t do so without comparing it to Sopranos. Which makes sense, it’s just that I can’t relate without a lifetime of loving the series haha

I don’t hate that movie by any stretch. I also feel like everyone that I’ve personally talked to would have absolutely loved it if it was embedded in the series as flashbacks- and the reasons they cited for not liking it- weren’t consistent with the sopranos series as a whole either.

But I didn’t express my actual opinion on the Many Saints of Newark.

So if I were to express my sentiments it would read like this…

The so very few saints if any of newark. A ham fisted ill conceived, go no where, tells no story tale that caters to the most superficial, entry level of sopranos experiences. The characters are not developed, the plot is plodding at best, convoluted with no purpose, carrying not even the essence or a semblance of the storytelling from the series. Bad SNL impressions, caricatures rather of once well known characters cover most of the film with few doing much more than repeating old lines we’ve all heard before in a pedantic, pandering attempt at fan service. Nothing is drawn out or tied together. It is the single most disappointing movie experience of my lifetime.

4. The Batman
5. Joker
6. Batman vs. Superman
7. Justice League

I've seen all the Keaton, Clooney, and Kilmer movies as well, but all back when they came out so I wouldn't know how to rank them nowadays. I actually just watched The Batman for the first time last night and while I think Robert Pattinson crushed it (he may have overtaken Bale as my favorite Batman actor) I was a little disappointed by the movie as a whole.

3. Dark Knight

My original post...

1. Batman Begins (TDK is so overrated)
2. Batman 1989 (Nicholson is the best live-action Joker...deal with it)
3. The Dark Knight - I firmly believe that Heath Ledger's joker gets more credit due to his early death. He isn't even playing Joker. He's just playing a random crazy person.
4. Batman Returns
5. Batman Forever - I know it's campy as hell, but it's still a lot of fun. Jim Carrey is great in it.
6. Batman v Superman - Superman is my favorite super hero, but they really blew it with this one.
7. Batman & Robin - This is crap

Suicide Squad - This is not a Batman movie. He makes a cameo. The movie is also way better than people give it credit for.

Yeah, I can get that. Tbh I didn't like it that much the first time I saw it. The sequels kinda helped to improve my opinion of it.

New topic, the long-awaited Top 10 Classic Rock Songs.

The way I'm gonna define this for the thread is rock music (any variation of rock music) released up to 1989. 1990 and on is a big fat DQ. There were just so many more acts and prominent artists, genres and sub-genres from the 90s-forward that I feel each decade deserves its own round.

Admittedly not a giant classic rock fan, however the classic rock acts I AM a fan of, I'm a BIG ol' fan of. So, my top 10 no significant order:

1. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Bob Dylan
2. Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
3. This Will Be Our Year - The Zombies
4. Revolution - The Beatles
5. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
6. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
7. A Day in the Life - The Beatles
8. Silver Spring - Fleetwood Mac
9. Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
10. The Trooper - Iron Maiden

Pink Floyd should prob be on there somewhere but whatev.

Kick Out The Jams - MC5
The Boys Are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking- Rolling Stones
Lonely is the Night - Billy Squire
Search and Destroy - Iggy Pop & The Stooges
Riders on the Storm - The Doors

Fudging hard having to eliminate like 6 other songs.

As everyone said, tough as heck. I didn't want to do it, but wth. Going to limit it to 1 song per band officially. Not 100% sure what "classic rock" is defined as. I assume pre-80's "rock" music? (a blend of genres really)

Hey Bulldog - Beatles (Revolution, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Saw Her Standing There, I Want You, Helter Skelter... so many excellent "rock" songs)
Paint it Black - Rolling Stones (really wanted to choose Sympathy for the Devil, but this intro is mind melting)
War Pigs - Black Sabbath
Black Betty - Ram Jam
House of the Rising Sun - Animals
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (too many to choose from, but it is what it is)
Blistered - Johnny Cash (Cocaine Blues, Folsom Prison, Get Rythm, etc. Blistered is underrated imo)
Fortunate Son - CCR
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd (struggled calling this classic rock)
Life By the Drop - Stevie Ray Vaughn (Dude was a legend)

So many great bands omitted. So many great songs not mentioned. Would likely be vastly different in a few days. Struggled including some songs.. Not going to lie, I wanted to sneak STP in there. Weiland was a beast.

Same for Stand by Me. The only other movie I can think of that reminds me of summer is My Girl, but that was a downer.

I never did the Classic Rock list. This is super hard to do. What counts as Classic Rock? In my mind it's anything before 1980.

Zeppelin - I could pick all 10 from them, but I'll stick with 3 - Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song, Black Dog (not my favorites from them, but those are classics)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Beatles - Oh Darling
The Who - Baba O'Reily
Skynard - Free Bird
Springsteen - Born to Run
Pink Floyd - Money
Hendrix - Purple Rain
Kansas - Carry on My Wayward Son

Honestly, these are my favorites...actually only Oh Darling is my favorite of and of these groups, but they are definitely some of the most iconic Classic Rock songs ever.

The last topic was Top 10 Summer Movies, so this time around I'm asking for Top 10 Autumn Movies. These aren't necessarily HALLOWEEN/horror movies, but can be if ya want. Some of mine are carry overs from my favorite Halloween movies, but I figured I'd make an effort to offer movies that just happen to take place during the Fall.

1. Knives Out - I gush about this movie enough but the fact that it takes place in the Fall makes me love it even more.
2. Good Will Hunting - Just a great movie that happens to take place with the colors of Fall as its backdrop.
3. The Fantastic Mr. Fox - Maybe the MOST "Autumn movie" on my list, if we're going solely by color palette.
4. October Sky - Definition of a "feel good movie" and one I can watch at any time.
5. Hocus Pocus - Not the greatest movie ever but as a 90s kid (and one from Massachusetts), this movie encapsulates Autumn perfectly during the Halloween season.
6. ET The Extra Terrestrial - Classic movie all around, but the Halloween scenes especially stand out.
7. Coraline - Another one of my favorite animated movies. It nails that spooky childhood wonder aspect of the season.
8. Rushmore - This captures the "back to school for the Fall" vibe, but in a somewhat gloomy way, real well. We all got somewhat excited for the start of the school year, but it didn't take long for it to gloom up.
9. Coco - Best usage of leaves in an animated movie, I'll tell ya that much.
10. Monster House - Honestly sort of reminds me of Summer because I first watched it with a pal while we were spending a weekend in Cape Cod back in the day, but has become a Halloween staple for me.

theJaw's 2023 Movie Awards

The "Best Film" Award:
Quintuple Gold Star Asteroid City - One of those movies that made me question whether or not I liked it at first. I've now seen it 5 times and it rivals The Darjeeling Limited and The Royal Tenenbaums as favorite Anderson movie.

The "Pleasantly Surprised" Award:
Triple Silver Good Trader Talk to Me - This technically released outside of the states in 2022, but released to DVD/Blu Ray here in the US in 2023. Since that was my first opportunity to watch it, it's getting the nod. Such a great horror movie with a very engaging concept, awesome characters and wonderful ending. Expected nothing and got one of my favorite modern horror movies in return.

The "Most Underrated" Award:
Silver Star Tetris - Great movie with awesome performances. Maybe a teensy bit too long, but it was still very good. No idea why no one talks about this one.

The "One I Still Want to See Most" Award:
wants what you have The Iron Claw - A story I'm very familiar with and with all the buzz, I can't imagine I'll be disappointed (despite some of the historical inaccuracies). Really looking forward to seeing this. Godzilla: Minus One, Poor Things, Maestro and Killers of the Flower Moon are all VERY close runner-ups though. Especially Godzilla.

The "Not Nearly As Bad As People Acted Like It Was" Award:
yes Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - It wasn't great but it was a perfectly fine Indiana Jones romp, even with all the distracting de-aging. I liked it way more than Crystal Skull, at least.

The "Most Disappointing" Award:
bomb The Flash - I didn't mind this movie, all things considered. But it was just a very mid-tier superhero outing. I went into it hoping the Ezra Miller BS wouldn't eclipse it but he's just so unlikable that it sort of did. Michael Keaton's Batman was great once he got back in the suit -- but he deserves far better for what could be his final appearance as the character.

The "Worst Film" Award:
no Rebel Moon - I don't dislike everything Zack Snyder does - love Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen and really enjoyed his cut of Justice League. But he also puts out stinkers, and Rebel Moon stunk. Amalgamation of sci fi/fantasy tropes that have been done better in other movies. Just entirely uninspired other than a few great character designs and a few wonderful visuals. Also the whole "Star Wars killer" buzz surrounding it from the most toxic of "fans" on the internet put a sour taste in my mouth, but can't hold that against the movie itself. It just wasn't very good.

I saw just a few 2023 movies.

Dungeons and Dragons
Mario Movie
The Flash

Dungeons and Dragons was fun.

Mario Movie I enjoyed. Peaches peaches peaches peaches peaches.

The Flash - hmmm. I don't know if I enjoyed it all that much. It had some enjoyable moments, but overall wasn't very memorable to me.

I tried watching Shazam, but got bored. Stopped in middle.

@theJaw You reminded me, I've been wanting to watch Tetris.

Someone recommended it to me very recently. I hadn't even heard of the movie.

As long as you don't mind subtitles it's a really good movie. I'm a Godzilla fan so I was counting down the days until it released here.

I don't mind subtitles. I'll keep it in mind. When I get a chance to see it, I will.

Good:
Super Mario Bros Movie
John Wick 4

Meh:
Oppenheimer

That's all I've seen so far. Mario and Wick were shut your brain off for 2 hours and enjoy. Oppenheimer was typical Hollywood. The actual story is extremely interesting without embellishment, and it easily could have been PG-13.

Oppenheimer is my least favorite Nolan I’m pretty sure.

Killers of the flower moon. 5/10

Another overly bloated movie. Had to google it to be sure I didn’t miss something. I didn’t. The story is not that good.
