Unacceptable is a bit much imo. It has issues, but it's a demo with no patch. Emulation on the NES Classic was deemed "unacceptable", yet I was able to no death run it as easily as an OG NES. I found the demo ok, should be fine with patches. Bloodstained was much worse and that turned out great.

Have you compared it to other systems? I mean, it's definitely playable, but there is absolutely no reason for it to be performing so poorly. If the Switch can handle Tears of the Kingdom, it can handle an average looking 2D run and gun. I mean, hell, Contra 3 on SNES ran better than this. I hope it gets patched and fixed before release, but right now, it is unacceptable.

F-Zero! Wow. that bring me back to the Gamecube one. North America got another game for the GBA in 2004, Japan got another one for the GBA, and I believe that was it.

I wonder if they'd revive it though, when Mario Kart is their bread and butter racing game.

They likely will keep F-Zero as a Tetris 99 style free to play online game I think for a long time. I did hear though on Did You Know Gaming YT channel that the creator of F-Zero is interested in making a true sequel but no development team he feels is ready to take on the challenge yet. Ah well. One day. Until then a boy can dream!

The last I heard about F-Zero 99 was that it was getting more and more difficult to even get a full 99 players. It seems of the retro games that went the free-to-play battle royal route (F-Zero, Bomberman, Pac-man Tetris, etc.) only Tetris has the playerbase to last. Unfortunately Nintendo might view that as nobody wants a new F-Zero. For me personally I never was a fan of F-Zero on SNES, so I was not interested from the start when they announced F-Zero 99 and I saw that was the version they were basing it on. The N64 or GameCube versions would've been the way to go, imo.

Still FRIGGIN waiting.

I’m opening mine up, I can’t wait to read the earlier version of the script. I know it’s available online but I love binding, can’t help it.

I don’t feel like this sort of thing is ever going to become a “collector’s item” - at least more than it already is. I think anyone who would ever want it probably pre-ordered this set haha.

Is the packaging nice?

Played the demo for the new Peach game. Easy pass. Kirby meets barbie. It has its place just not in my collection.

Prince of Persia demo was decent, but it started off with what I'm assuming was a glitch. In the first screen the character floated around left and right, couldn't do anything else.

Had a pretty funny dream last night about the Switch's successor early this morning and wanted to jot it down before I forget most of it. My awake thoughts in (parentheses):

My family is sitting in the living room watching the TV which is awaiting a Nintendo Direct. With no fanfare, a standard looking console fades in from black. It looks a bit like a slightly smaller N64 only two tone, a thin light gray stripe on the bottom and a darker, charcoal color on the top 3/4. A controller then lifts out of the top (hilariously) revealing an N64 shaped controller. It is more streamlined however. You can easily access all the sticks and buttons without repositioning your hands, and it has all the ammenities of a modern controller. (I never question why the middle "wing/handle" is present lol) In the middle where the "Nintendo" logo was a screen turns on. It is irregularly shaped, conforming to the shape of the controller. Then from the back of the controller a second screen folds up revealing a reverse DS-like system where the screens are (stupidly) on the outside. There is a camera on the backside of this screen allowing for augmented reality. Bright modern HD graphics play on both screens. The bottom screen is a touch screen. (You are now able to play virtually every Nintendo game made on one system) The controller is the new Switch, and the console is a charging dock that wirelessly boosts the new Switch's performance from anywhere. I wonder if it is based on a cell signal? (5G, a feature of the new Nintendo Online! I wonder if Nintendo just made the world's most impractical cell phone?)

The screen zooms in to the major controller screen until the two become one. Xbox logo and sound appears. A trailer plays for a Forza motorsports game. It looks realistic with dirt flying everywhere. Then a war game. Boots are marching in a convoy. It peels back to reveal the convoy is of Halo soldiers and vehicles. A "Halo Legions" (or regions?) title fades in. Is this an MMO? A new Call of Duty trailer. Another trailer about monsters scares one of my sons who leaves the room. (DOOM or Duke Nuke Em maybe? Wasn't sure, I think I awoke momentarily)

Next the Squaresoft logo. "Fantasy Life" comes on the screen in the Final Fantasy text. It shows gameplay of an ultra customizable, online playground of gaming. The graphics are 2d (PS1 2d quality). The customization of the character leads to 1000's of options including numerous different lifeforms. You can save dozens of your creations to choose at any time.
It then shows a few of the online games you can play including an RPG. This is one of those games where you go to a small world to interact of others online, and then after forming a party you select a game by going to a room that starts whatever game you choose like the said RPG.

(I think I'm starting to wake up now) A Playstation logo appears. I realize the age of exclusivity is over, and that is this generations biggest advancement. I don't really pay much attention to the remaining trailers, but I know there are some games associated with Playstation in there. (I'm waking up now, in and out of sleep). The system's name appears. "NEXT" The "E" and "T" fade out, and the N and X come together revealing the new system logo. It's a crisp gold "NX" encirled in a rounded off square with a black background. (Think the Rare logo without the colored background and more clean, simple, like THX.) The direct is over. There were no Nintendo games. I briefly ponder if Nintendo abandoned software development before waking up. (A partner's showcase where they revealed they are now partners with Sony alongside Microsoft while announcing a new system.)

Keep in mind this was a dream, not a prediction. Pretty funny stuff. I like how it involved some rumors from the past, yet out of no where N64 design inspiration out of all systems. LOL

Did yours by chance arrive damaged and smashed? For some reason Amazon thought it a good idea to ship these heavy, delicate CEs in a bubble mailer. Mine wasn't terrible, but smashed enough that I complained and had them send me another. They assured me they would do better and send it in a box. Lo and behold the second one arrived in a bubble mailer as well and was even more smashed than the first copy. So, I contacted Amazon again, and instead of giving it a third try, they offered to let me send one back, keep the other, and give me a full refund. I can live with that!

Lucky for you, aside from the slightly damaged corners, which I can usually overlook, there was a small tear starting in the heavy duty outer box itself, the box the cards came in had a tab completely ripped off, and was smashed in hard enough of a way that the little bag containing dice had left indents on several of the cards. It was also smashed hard enough that the grooves of the Switch case were cutting into the games' coverart.

I also thought it was strange that the game itself was not shrink wrapped in both copies that were sent to me. Were they opened just to slap the code insert into the case?

My game also wasn't shrink wrapped, and I saw others mention it on reddit. So I guess that applies to all the CEs. I don't see any issue with it since the CE itself was sealed. So collectors can still leave it unopened. I've also heard about that happening to others regarding the card game.

I have over 30 hours into Unicorn Overlord so far. (Including the 8 hours I put in the demo.) I won a level 25 battle yesterday with most of my units level 20 or less, and that let me go to the northern snowy area. I've mostly finished Cornia and Drakenhold, and have done some battles in the elf land as well. I recently started messing with the gambit system for the first time and it's fun setting it up to get units to do what you want. For instance, one of the elves has an attack that can summon a fairy, which can affect another skill she uses. So I set up so that she always does the former first, which summons the fairy as long as her health is full. Probably going to be one of my favorite strategy games, based on how much I've been enjoying it.

I'm also considering getting Kingdom Come Deliverance tomorrow. I'm always down for a big open world RPG. Might wait for a sale though.

I don't know if anyone else has been following this, but with the Wii U online servers going offline for good in about 3 weeks, a team of players have been working together to clear every last level in Super Mario Maker before that happens and the game becomes unplayable. As of 5 hours ago there is only one level left that remains unbeaten:

They stopped allowing new levels in March 2021 (same day they killed off Super Mario 35 and stopped producing Super Mario 3D All-stars). After April 8 you won't be able to play any levels unless you download them now while the servers are still up.

He spent 7 years trying to beat that level so he could finally upload it. Unfortunately by the time he beat it, it was around a year and a half after the game stopped allowing new uploads. The only version of that level that exists is in his personal save file. He did upload a dumbed down version of it with a dev exit just so other players would be able to play the level, but because of that dev exit, it has been cleared many times, idk if anyone besides him beat it the intended hard way.

Does Arceous ever just open up? I just started playing it as my kid has been asking me to and it's the first Pokémon game I kind of enjoy. Only downside is all the dialogue and 'go here do this'. I think I'd really dig it if it was Pokémon BotW, where you were free to roam an overworld and challenge anything you come across. I've given a few Pokémon games a chance, this is the only one that's held my interest for more than a few minutes.

I assume that's a video of the person who uploaded it. You are required to beat it in order to upload it.

@KCPenguins is right. That video was recorded (way back in 2017) by the guy who made the level and had to beat it himself before he could upload it for others to play. But the game doesn't count the uploader's clear beyond that, so it is still listed as being unbeaten in the game itself. So far around 1100 people have played this level, and there are over 92,000 failed attempts combined between them.

Just realized I still have $16 on my Nintendo account from a gift card. What are some recommendations for Switch games under that price point?

DBZ Kakarot Deluxe Edition is only $20 so I may drop the extra $4 for that, but wanna know if there's anything I shouldn't miss.

At evillecon, have an atgames legends flashback out which has Famicom Tetris built in. This guy has been playing it for about hour

Not a single game but playing over and over.

Anyone who has played it knows it is a terrible version of the game compared to pretty much every other console version. And yet he plays. And plays.

Right? The system also has Tetris Plus 2 which is by every measure a better game. Additionally we had Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 and 2, Nintendo Tetris for NES, Tetris The Grand Master, Tetris Battle Gaiden, Gameboy Tetris for Switch Online, and if he had brought a DS or 3DS we could have fired up a wireless game of Tetris DS with him!

But instead it was Famicom Tetris.

Guys I’m doing it, I’m really doing it. Finally played further than the second world of Super Mario Bros 2. Up to world 5!

After like… 30 years of only ever getting past the first Birdo fight before losing interest, I’m finally plowing through. I gotta say, the first levels of SMB2 does the game no justice. It gets so much better once you get past the second world. Loving the balanced difficulty that still makes me flip out, but also satisfies me when a level is complete.

Legit felt like a kid again discovering what SMB2 actually had in store after having played only a little bit of it since I legitimately WAS a kid. Mario always does it to me, I tell ya. When Wonder came out, I felt transported back to a simpler time, and now SMB2 is having the same effect.

If you have played any other version of Tetris besides maybe the earliest computer versions, even just a few minutes of Famicom Tetris would be enough to make you want to play any of those other versions instead. He played for at least an hour and a half, right up until a few minutes before the Tetris tournament started. (He did not participate in the tournament.)

Maybe he was just mesmerized by how bad it was?

What makes the Famicom version such a bad version anyway? Does it just have poor performance, does it mess up the basics, or is it something else?

Kind of sad they cut this concept from Wonder, but I guess it wouldn't really fit what they were going for. They should really flesh this out as a full fledged game and make it available to purchase.

New SW Battlefront collection and Contra Galuga getting mixed reviews. Not too surprising. Funny enough last I checked the Switch version of Contra had slightly better reviews than the PS5 version. For Battlefront many of the complaints seem to center around online play of which I have little interest in. We'll see if they clean them up and I'll probably get both when on sale.

Anyone get either?

Super Mario Maker has been beaten. That level I posted about last week, well, it was the last unbeaten level for a reason. The creator of it finally came out and admitted he used a cheat tool when he had to beat the level in order to upload it. That level has sat on Nintendo's servers since 2017 unbeaten and finally the guy felt guilty and decided to admit it cannot be beaten legitimately.

Playing Pokémon Arceus at my kid's request. I've tried a few pokemon games before, but nothing seemed interesting enough to play more than a couple hours. I don't think mine die out in as quickly as a few days, but I don't think I've ever gone more than 2 weeks without using mine. I do notice that Pro Controller seems to recharge slower than any of my other controllers though.

I didn't want to make a new thread for this, but I saw this debate on Facebook so I figured I'd ask here. Where do you guys draw the line at what is considered "retro"? What was said was something like SNES was 15 years old and considered "retro" by 2006 when the Wii had released. But in 2024 the Wii turns 18 and not many consider it "retro" yet.

KCPenguins

I don't get bent out of shape over the term. In the past I considered more than 2 generations "retro", so 360, PS3, Wii would now be retro. There is also an aspect of inflated worth among collectors that I don't consider too much. When a gen bottoms out, then start to rebound some people start to throw the retro out. Others are about age in influence/importance. 3+ gens in my non-influential opinion.

I've recently learned that what I thought was a complete collection of Nintendo Tetris games was missing two games: Super Bombliss (SFC) and Super Bombliss DX (GBC). While I have the U.S. version of Super Bombliss for Game Boy (Tetris Blast in the U.S.), I hadn't realized that there was a SFC and GBC version. I will soon rectify this oversight.

Looks fun. Has that N64 vibe. Haven't heard of the game before. I kinda miss the N64. Makes me think of that controller. Although I didn't have issues with the 'designed for aliens controller' back in the day, it is a bit of a strange design. I wonder if there are devs from then who talk about what was behind the design.

Yeah, back when the respective consoles were relevant I didn't have much problem at all adjusting to the Nintendo 64 controller, GameCube controller, or Wii Remote & Nunchuck. But now after having not played them for so long, I don't think I could go back to using them regularly again. If I want to play anything from those consoles, I'd prefer to do it on a modern console with a Pro Controller. That's one reason why I kinda like that the Xbox and PlayStation controllers have stayed largely the same over the years. It also helps make it easy to adjust to the back catalog of 20+ year old games those systems allow you to play.

Played around with online trading. A dude gave me a shiny alpha level 100 umbreon for basically nothing, and the name on it was some ".net". My kids freaked out, and after initially begging to trade online and then watching me body multiple alphas they put in a rule no online trading. LOL

Edit: looks like this is a bot.. Not sure what it achieves.

With only around 3 days to spare before the servers go offline, a player from France did manage to beat that level legit and he did it on live stream. There was a huge bounty on that level that he will be collecting.

Pokemon Arceus - what's the secret sauce for catching higher level pokemon? I tried forever to catch an alpha infernape. Got it down to almost no health and spammed great balls, heavy balls, lead balls, wing balls. Always broke out. Tried a dozen times, no luck. This is using my maxed out umbreon I got from a random online trade and the other highish level alphas I caught with it. I can bury the thing in no time, but I struggled to catch it.

I tried the stealth approach firing back shots with lead balls. Immediately broke free and attacked. I tried sticky balls, food, same thing. Then one time I came up on it stealth like, threw some food, shot a lead ball and there was no struggle and it was captured. I felt like this could have been done 2 stars ago. I battled the alpha snorlax and after a dozen great balls finally captured it. It doesn't seem like battling them down to low health is the way to go. Is there timing involved in back shots? Does it only apply when food is involved?

Any other tips on capturing alphas/stronger pokemon? I've read a bunch of posts online, but either I'm not following what they're saying or it's flat out wrong.

As mentioned before, this is the first pokemon game I've played more than an hour or two. I tried a few over the years including back in the day, but none quite got their hooks into me like Arceus has.

@KCPenguins Try baiting the Alpha with a berry. Try to throw the berry so that the Alpha will turn its back to you. Then when it's eating the berry, throw a heavyball at its back, or your best pokeball if you don't have. If the Alpha breaks out, throw another berry and try again.

Is it timing based, distance based, random, or something else when it comes to the back shot? I've also seen a red "X" appear above their head which I assume means you can't catch them, but I swear I've caught some with a red "X" above their head when I sent the pokeball in for capture.

Do any of you still get e-mails from Nintendo letting you know when games on your wishlist are on sale? I haven't gotten one in months, probably since the start of the year. It could be longer and I just didn't notice at first.

Edit: I've asked this on a couple of different Nintendo-centric Discord servers and it seems nobody else gets them anymore either. That seems pretty dumb that they would stop that and might explain why I've not spent a dime in the eShop so far this year after wasting so much money in there between 2017 and 2023.

That Umbreon may not be legit. There are people hacking in Pokémon all over the place. Hopefully it won't mess up your game.

I looked up the website. It's a bot that trades pokemon for whatever reason. I've played around 10 hours since getting it. Hasn't messed up anything so far.

Honestly I've quit using it as it's not necessary. It doesn't seem to help in catching pokemon outside of getting more opportunities to watch them break out of balls, and if I use it to fight I kill them too quickly.

Same. I'm not sure why I watch the Nindies. It'd be nice if they cut out the developer interviews, just show the games/trailers. I get why they do it, but it adds nothing for me.

Not gonna lie, that made me cry a little mentally.

One thing I'll say about Indies, gameplay aside, many have great soundtracks.

Indies have their place. They helped keep Wii U and PS Vita afloat for far longer than either would have lasted without them when the big name publishers bailed on each of those platforms (Switch is going through this phase now).
I will say though, the indie scene has changed. They're no longer the risk takers and innovators they used to be. Remember that one infamous Nindie Direct that was remembered only for having all those farming sims? If it's not that it's roguelikes.

There's still a lot of good and fresh stuff coming out but as indie has become more mainstream there are definitely some crutches that a lot of them are using.

Part of that is because it is now mainstream, a lot more copycats are jumping in on the trends they see.

Farming/crafting/roguelike/metroidvania backtracking are ways to significantly increase the length of your game without as significant an investment in time/resources.

Because like it or not, people still get offended if your game is short. Adding padding might dilute a game's strengths, but as long as it keeps people's interest long enough to get past the steam refund window...

> Remember that one infamous Nindie Direct that was
> remembered only for having all those farming sims? If it's not that it's roguelikes.

I don't think that was a Nindie, I think that was a regular one. I remember there being a lit of farming/crafting in whatever one Harvestella was featured (square enix so definitely not an indie ).

Or it could have just gotten so bad that they are multiple Nintendo directs with this issue and even the big publishers want to churn out farming games.

Walmart has a lot of Switch games on sale right. Many first party $40-50. Plants vs Zombies and Monkey Ball Mania $5 each. Other games on sale too. I found Splatoon 2 for under $10 used (pegi version pictured) by a third party who claims they 100% check their used items. Figured I'd give it a shot as it was returnable to Walmart.

My Xbox One S took a crap some time ago... So I been playing on the Switch lately... I'm working on LoZ: BotW... it's nice, colorful, but man some things bug me about it... not just the breaking of the weapons, that's more of a minor annoyance, but the horse riding controls seem "stuck" and then there's trying to get away from Guardians and getting stuck somehow when I try to avoid the beams and end up dying...

I'm not letting it deter me from playing it to completion though (not counting the DLC I saw available).

I remember Nintendo kinda making a big deal about the horseback riding in BotW, because they figured out a way so as long as you don't touch the analog stick your horse would avoid crashing into trees and stuff when running at full speed because "real horses don't crash into trees."
I don't think it ended up working out as well as they thought it would, and the horseback riding controls in Horizon and Ghost Of Tsushima felt much better to me.

Don't forget they put in a bonding aspect to horseback riding. The horse won't listen well to inputs unless Link is bonded to it to a degree.

Start with a price cut and announcing some new games then, because a remake of a 20 year Paper Mario game and a decade old Luigi's Mansion ain't exactly doing it for a lot of people. I don't think entries in either series typically are known for blowing up the sales charts and certainly aren't system sellers. Endless Ocean, I do want to check it out at some point in the future, but judging by reviews it was a dud. There's just not much to look forward to and this upcoming Direct needs to change that. At this point they'd be dumb to not just put Metroid Prime 4 on the next console, but it'll probably be cross-gen.

And a "selects" line of $20 first party games as well.

I think they release one more big release this holiday for Switch with a couple low end releases. New 3d Mario if I had to guess, maybe Metroid Prime 4. The pessimist (realist?) says it will be something along the lines of a Super Mario Galaxy 2 remaster.

I have two WaveBird controllers that I've had since they were released. Unfortunately, after years of use (and my cat chewing on them for some strange reason), the analog sticks are in terrible shape and falling apart. However, after doing some research on it, I found out that the stick on the Wii Nunchuck is identical to that of the WaveBird! Well, I say identical, but not exactly because they lack the rubbery top that the WaveBird controllers have. The good news is that I was able to swap the sticks out with those from some old, cheap Wii Nunchucks and they work like a charm!

In addition to changing out the sticks on my WaveBirds, I was able to have a little fun customizing some Wii Nunchucks. I was able to do this because I bought a lot of five untested Nunchucks of various colors on Ebay for $15.00. Luckily, they all worked! Since I already had two white ones of my own, I took them all apart and mixed the colors. This is what I came up with:

That sucks. The Portal games are so good, but idk if I'd have the patience to sit through frequent load times like that. I replayed it in 2022, maybe it's because I played it off my SSD that I don't recall the load times being an issue.

My thoughts, without having not played it, is it might not be worth ruining what might be a great gaming experience by playing it like that. Do you have potential access to it on another platform?

I picked up the Portal Companion Collection sometime last year. I probably own Portal on every device it's available on. I love both games with a passion and want Valve to know the (mine at least) demand for a new game.

I played all through Portal 1 on Switch last year and it ran great. I'll have to give 2 a try to see about these loading times. It'll be quite jarring, since last I played Portal 2 was 4K ultra-wide on PC with little to no loading times., laughing out loud

Let me know. Initially I thought it was hung up on the load screen and that I had a bad download. I'm running it off the SD card obviously due to Switch storage constraints, but no other games on SD are anywhere near this bad.

I've learned to live with it, so I'll finish it, but man they should be embarrassed by this release.

So the game froze on the pause screen... ugh. I decided to time it.

50 seconds to get to the load screen
Another 4:15 just to get to THE MAIN MENU (static load screen the whole time)! Over 5 minutes to load the main menu!

Another 33 seconds to get to the resume campaign load menu, and another 30+ seconds to load. It's well over 6 minutes of wait time from the time you boot the game to when you actually start playing. Even Playstation 1 games weren't that bad.

Each stage beat is around 1 minute of wait time while it generates the load screen then loads the next stage.

This can't be right, but I've seen multiple posts online saying load times were nuts on other platforms. Yet I've seen reviews saying the game plays flawlessly on Switch. I wouldn't call this flawless.
