I had plans to simply have a nice dinner and then take a walk on the beach where we first started dating and liked to visit. But the week before those plans she figured out I had hidden "a present" (the ring) for her, and she spent about an hour making more and more ridiculous guesses about what it might be. I found that too adorable and caved. I went and got the ring and ended up proposing in the hallway haha. And it was perfect.

My wife love photography and I've been known to use Groupon to find good date ideas. I thought a photography class would be a great way to surprise her and get the moment captured. I reached out to a photography instructor that did outdoor classes and asked if he would be help me with the big moment and would make one of his classes at my wife's favorite beach. The guy agreed and I booked a class through Groupon and invited another couple to join us for a double date (I'll take all the help I can get to make it special). The class was still a legitimate class, other people could sign up and there was a full class.

I worked with the instructor to setup a moment where he would ask for volunteers to do couples poses. My wife took the bait and volunteered us to be the couple. After a few poses that the instructor put us in, I asked the instructor if there was one more pose that we could try. That's when I pulled the ring from my back pocket (no box) and got down on one knee. I gave my little "marry me" speech, she said yes, and after a few cheers and congrats, we headed off to a friend's clubhouse where a bunch of friends and family were to celebrate the moment.

There were a couple of minor hiccups leading up to the proposal. The traffic was terrible that day and parking at the beach was also a pain, so we were actually a little late to the class. I had also had a voice recorder in my pocket with a mic taped to my chest. The tape came loose and the mic fell as we were walking to the beach. Thankfully she didn't see that, but I couldn't put it back in place, so the voice recording of the proposal was basically trash. I was going to use it to put into the video recording one of our friends was doing with their DSLR, but some nice music had to do.

My wife had always wanted to go to Hawaii, so I got her parents to pretend to plan a trip there (with me booking everything and giving them the info), and then all of the family members gave reasons over the days and weeks that followed for dropping out, leaving the two of us to go on the trip. When we got to Maui, we spent the first couple of nights in Hana in a cabin in the forest, and my plan was to propose to her at the end of this beautiful red ti flower maze. I had the ring all ready. I knew she wanted something non-traditional and loved sapphires. Since most sapphires in the U.S. are synthetic, I picked out a nice legit one straight from a Thai mine and had it cut for her and set in a band I had a local jeweler make in a design that looked like her style.

Unfortunately, when we got to the red ti maze, it was absolutely full of spiders—the one thing my wife is most afraid of. I was hacking down webs, but the further we went in, the worse it got. Eventually, we gave up, and I had no idea what to do next.

The next day, we were exploring and just stumbled upon the perfect place: a black sand beach with big obsidian arches, spires, outcrops, and ledges and bright blue waves crashing against them. I told her that I loved going on adventures with her and asked if she wanted to keep going on them for the rest of our lives.

We spent the following few days going to a luau, exploring the beaches, zip-lining, and celebrating.

First time - at the Grand Canyon, but she was a crapty human being that fudgeed it up and thankfully we never got married - bullet dodged!

Took my wife to Italy for her 30th bday, and popped the question on a gondola in Venice. Was pretty badass! ... minus the fact that the Gondolier decided to make a cell phone call after the proposal and totally killed the vibe!

See, look at this butt-hole ... well, there's two. The guy on the phone, and the other dickhead with an incredibly messed up collar on the undershirt - haha, first time I've noticed this!

I recorded a video of myself proposing and got a movie theater to play it at the movie we were going to see, between some of the previews.

Thanks! She knew I was planning to propose within a pretty specific timeframe (long story short - we were long distance for a short period of time after she graduated HS but she came back to visit for a weekend, and I did it then) and I still managed to surprise her. A lot of people in the theater didn't realize what was going on and thought it was some sort of advertisement or something, but excitement quickly grew as more and more people figured out what was happening. The craziest part was, we almost missed it! We got there early, but there was the longest line I've ever seen at a movie theater, and it was moving SLOW. After a few minutes, I could tell there was no way we were getting in there in time and I started to panic. I pretended like I saw someone I knew, asked my wife to hold our spot, then I ran up to the front of the line and explained my situation to a group of strangers. They let us front them so that we could jump to the front of the line and get inside in time. Shew!

Make sure to make her an honorary member of RETC. Women love exclusive stuff.

In a time before everyone made a production out of wedding proposals, ender reveals, etc., I never actually proposed. I graduated college in May and was having a long distance relationship with my girlfriend who had graduated college the previous year. This was in the days before e-mail and free long distance phone calls, so we communicated by handwritten letters that we would snail mail and wait a week or more for a response. We only saw each other in person twice a year before that summer, and that summer we met about halfway in June. I don't think I even planned it and I didn't have a ring, but at one point while we were talking about our future plans I said something to the effect of "I think we should get married in August". This August we'll have been married 46 years.

My wife and I will be celebrating our 18th this October, and I'm only 37. I'm quickly approaching the point where I will have been married over half of my life.

In addition, you have also lived with your wife about as long as you lived with your parents.
