Man this one is tough. I love Immolation, they’ve objectively never put out an album I would rate lower than good. I do think Cannibal Corpse deserve their level of success, even if it was right band right time. They arguably got better after Barnes departed even though their early albums still remain the most popular. Either way both bands are putting out quality albums late in there careers which is uncommon
For the Metallica/Megadeth debate, I think Megadeth is better but Metallica branched into rock to gain a bigger audience and succeeded. If someone not into Metal ask for a recommendation, I always tell them to listen to Holy Wars. If they don’t feel something listening to that they may not ever get into Metal. Rust in Peace is perfect and beats any Metallica album. Megadeth have also released crap in the last 10 years that would fit right in with their late 80s/early 90s output.
I guess my opinion that I take as facts are the big 4 are the big 4 for a reason. Their influence on every genre of metal is massive and shaped the scene for 20 years. Even though there are other Bay Area bands better (testament, vio-lence), their influence wasn’t as large outside thrash.
Trve/kult/whatever you want to call it Black Metal is the lazy and boring at this point and staying true to it is holding back a lot of euro black Metal. The Asian and American BM experimentation has allowed BM to actually advance beyond “this must sound like crap”.
