I am fundamentally opposed to game awards decided by popular vote. The award for popularity is called "sales;" you don't need a trophy to go with that.

Game awards (like most others) should be decided by people who know the industry inside and out. Once you have a certain number of years of professional experience working in the industry (maybe 10+ years?), whether as a designer, programmer, artist, producer, or even potentially a journalist, only then do you become eligible to vote.

But what if you play and buy the games that keep those folks employed?

A pat on the head. But no votes.

If there were awards for most impressive coding etc I’d agree with you. It doesn’t take a skill set to vote for esports coach of the year or best voice actor etc.

That's like having an award for "best movie theater manager" or "best Gamestop location" or something.

Even so, I would guess that the vast majority of gamers have no concept of what makes an esports coach exceptional. Other than a win/loss record or something, in which case you don't need to vote because it's a mathematical process at that point. And even if they do have ideas on what makes a good coach, how many gamers can name multiple esports coaches and what makes them different?

And as far as best voice actor goes, maybe it doesn't take a great skill set to know when someone nails a role, but I think reserving the privilege of voting to dedicated industry veterans is still acceptable.

I would love to see an award for "least buggy game at launch".

No argument there. These awards are a farce.

I just voted for / against games I’ve never even played.

I voted for a video game.

They really want Alan wake 2 to win an award.

I am playing Alan Wake 2 now and while I am really enjoying it I don’t think it deserves to win or even be nominated for a GOTY. Let’s reserve that title for like Baldur’s Gate III.

A lot of overlap in those categories.

It's basically the same few games in nearly every category. There's so little variety.

The popular vote (public fan vote) is only 10%. 90% is voting jury.

Yeah, but to be fair there were some reports saying that they had no fixed period of time to make the game. So they had as much time as they wanted to polish it. How many other games can you say that about?

It's bizarre that a shipped functioning product is the exception rather than the rule.

The author's complaint is that any GOTY nominee should be excluded from the other categories because that makes the other categories largely redundant.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a GOTY nominee and a best RPG nominee? Well clearly if any of the other RPG nominees had a chance they would also be GOTY contenders.

I think his solution to the problem goes the wrong way because (as he even admits in the rant) it turns the subcategories into things like "Second Best RPG behind Baldur's Gate"

Why not have every voter provide a ranked choice style list of all the nominees from every category? Then those games that win their respective categories move on and the overall winner is decided from the ranked choice votes for those games.

And the 2023 Game Awards Game of the Year goes to... esports coach Danny “zonic” Sorensen!!!

Ok so the non-game categories don't need to have their nominees included in the GOTY rankings, smart guy.

I am going to predict Baldur’s Gate 3 is gonna clean house and Alan Wake II will get snubbed as it kinda should in most categories. The lead voice actress alone doesn’t deserve the nom IMO. Her accent keeps slipping and she sounds like she’s phoning it in.

I see Alan Wake did end up winning a lot of awards. I mean I really enjoyed the game but I didn't think it needed to win that many awards. Happy to see BG3 winning GOTY though as much deserved. And Spidey 2 got 7 noms but snubbed on all of them. Web swing into the wall! Ouch.

These awards have always felt a bit otherwise motivated in my mind. Huge representation by certain platforms, developers etc. you can usually accurately predict the winners based off of these associations. Alan wake is a good example- over represented in nominations no doubt. I hate that this thing has developed so much clout in the last few years.

Cookie cutter Superhero open world game that's probably not much different from the first game. Can't imagine why it didn't win anything.

They could have made a category for it. "Best Spiderman game" would be a more interesting category than best esports coach.

I was disappointed there was no controller fashion or household appliance category.

"Best thing Doom was ported to" would make for an unironically great category

I had a good enough time watching the awards. There were a number of reveals that got me excited, and I was really glad to see that they went for it with the Alan Wake musical number. The show is of course a 3 hour commercial presented as an awards show but that doesn't keep me from having some fun while it's on.

I also wish they’d stop with the Hellblade II foreplay already and just give us a frigging release date.

Oh I member! Still waiting on that Avowed game too which is supposed to be the Elder Scrolls killer made by Obsidian.

They sold lots of gamepass subs on those future releases. Then fable got reset and disappeared.

That’s one of the realities of a service like that. Smart consumers aren’t sitting on it. Lots do. If everyone did that no way it succeeds. I’m not saying businesses hope you don’t mind the empty promises- but it doesn’t hurt the bottom line if it takes longer than stated- starfield likely got a few extra months out of a few.

Yeah exactly. Like I make a list of games that release that I wanna play on GP then buy like a 3 month sub and likely don’t re-up unless another few games come out within that 3 month window. Play smarter. Not harder.

To my knowledge, no one at this awards ceremony was shown a WRAP IT UP sign after 10 seconds so that Hideo Kojima could blabber on for 8 minutes about nothing

Look at Spider-Man 2 nabbing all those awards they got snubbed on in The Hideo Kojima, I mean Jeff Kealey, I mean, The Game Awards.

But where's the award for best esports coach?

Yeah that category/choice was strange to me too. I mean I enjoyed most of my time with Diablo 4 but like once I finished the story I didn’t wanna go back again and again like I did with Diablo 3. I would think best online game would go to something like Overwatch 2 or some nonsense like that. Or did that come out in 2022? I can’t keep up with these online games anymore.

Monster hunter Rise / Sunbreak ps5 was my online GotY. It was a port of the switch game though- not new.
